Trigram Robot SUMO проводится в командном формате, каждая команда состоит из 2 участвующих учеников и 1-2 тренеров-преподавателей. Есть две категории: начальная школа и средняя школа. Учащиеся, участвующие в конкурсе, должны быть зачислены в начальную или среднюю школу на день конкурса. Арена соревнований представляет собой круглую площадку диаметром 2,8 метра. Платформа находится примерно в 35 сантиметрах над землей, а стартовая площадка робота имеет трапециевидную форму, расположенную в 50 сантиметрах от края. Зона внутри линии подготовки до края платформы является стартовой зоной для роботов, причем роботы каждой команды размещаются напротив друг друга в этой зоне.
